Apple Treat

Washington State has a reputation for apples and with good reason.  Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji, Braeburn, Cameo.  Is there anything more wholesome and delicious?

I’m fortunate to have two apple trees in my back yard and the cool summer was prime apple growing conditions for a prosperous fall crop.  When that first apple falls, I gather my cookbooks and dive into recipes flavored with nutmeg and cinnamon.

 

 

 
Apple butter, apple cake, apple muffins, apple cobbler, apple crisp, apple pie . . . I become Bubba of the Apple World.

 

 

The apple crumble I made last week was so tasty, that I wish I could give you a virtual bite.
At least I can share the recipe.

Apple Crumble

 
BOTTOM LAYER:
8 cups sliced apples, very thin
¾ cup white sugar
2 heaping tsp flour
1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp nutmeg
½ cup water
1 cup quick cooking oats
TOP LAYER:
1 cup flour
¾ cup brown sugar
¼ tsp baking powder
¼ tsp baking soda
1 stick melted butter ( ½ cup )
DIRECTIONS:
1.  Peel and core apples and slice very thin.  To the apples, add white sugar, 2 tsp flour, spices and water.  Mix until evenly coated and place in ungreased 9×9 in pan.
2. In separate bowl, mix oats, flour, powder, soda and melted butter.  Mix with hands until it forms a crumbly consistency and place evenly over the apples.
3. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 50 minutes or until apples are fork tender.
4. Enjoy with scoop of vanilla ice cream and coffee.  Yum.
